Herding

Working on her outrun.

Just one little bite won't hurt.

Jaz getting to the heads.

Ready.

Learning to flank.

Get back in the herd!

Jaz has always been a happy, active dog. Pregnancy did not slow her down. In the above photos, she is practicing her fetching on goats, 2 weeks before whelping her first litter. Toward the end, she paced more than usual. She definitely had that belly first walk, but everyone had to look twice to make sure she was carrying babes.

She worked right up to the delivery. The day after whelping, she was back out doing her chores. For a week after whelping, she fed her babies almost constantly. Then she started leaving them for 20 minutes, then an hour. In between chores, she always ran back to check on her babies.

As you can see from the photos, at this stage (2005), she is pushy, and true to her breed, working far too close to the stock..

Obedience

Jan earning the second leg of her CD.

Jaz heeling in the ring. If only I was as relaxed as she is.

Heeling on the sidewalk.Jaz on the left, Pep following on the right.

Watching strangers walk by. Jaz in front, Pep on my side.

Practicing for the Stand For Exam. One of the exercises of the CD. Dog must stand still while the judge pets head, shoulder and rear.

Practicing for the CGC brush test. Dog must allow a stranger to brush them and check their teeth.

Getting cookies on the nose. Jaz in front, Pep getting his cookie placed.

Holding those cookies, waiting for the release.

Out of sight downs.

Out of sight sits, while I pick up take out.

Jan loves working for kids because they are generous with the cookies. Pep wants his turn, too.

Jaz has earned her formal CGC and her CD, but obedience and good manners are a way of life for her. She often walks with me at the shopping plaza and waits outside while I pick up Chinese Take Out. The owners always put extra cookies in our bag because they enjoy watching her tricks. She is an enthusiastic performer.

Conformation

First weekend showing, 5 point major.

Third Major photo to be scanned.

Look carefully at her left rear leg.

Jaz is my first registered dog, and the first dog I ever took in the show ring. She earned a 5 point major her first weekend showing at 6 months old. The next month, her second weekend showing, she took a 3 point major. Since this was our first show dog, we then took a break from showing her, deciding to wait for her to grow up and make sure she could win some points from Open. She won some points in little shows from the 12-18 class, and finished her Championship with another 3 point major from Open, one year after she started showing. Jaz is an upbeat, happy dog, who always enjoyed showing.

I showed and trained Jaz myself. We gave her a bath before going to the shows, and let her air dry. Her toe nails really should be trimmed, but I do not clip them as often as I should.

Jaz was injured at 6 weeks old, and subsequently reinjured her left rear leg several times, causing her to have a slight limp. She earned her last major with the limp. After she finished conformation competition, she had cruciate ligament repair surgery. You can feel the fishing line knot in her leg. Our vet feels the early injury tore her ligament and each time she landed hard, she tore it a little more until it was finally severe enough to be diagnosed. Her good conformation covered up the injury for a long time. Notice the change in her stance from her first show photo to her last. Also look closely at the rear photo, you will see the difference in muscling, where she compensated for the injury.

Our vet assures us the limp was caused from the trauma of her injury and is not genetic.

Agility

Learning the tire.

Soaking wet Jaz shares her new pause table with Pep.

Jaz learns the teeter.

We are not ready for competition, but we enjoy an occasional romp on the agility field.
